Leadership within the property sector is evolving. More women are entering the industry, building successful careers, and moving into senior roles. Yet despite this progress, many women still find themselves working within environments where leadership teams remain predominantly male.

For women stepping into these spaces, confidence and leadership development can be shaped by experiences that differ from those of their male counterparts. Navigating male-dominated environments often requires resilience, adaptability, and strong support networks.

Understanding these dynamics is essential if the industry is to create workspaces where leadership potential can flourish for everyone.

Confidence in the Workplace

Confidence is often discussed as a personality trait, but it is strong influenced by workplace culture.

When individuals see people like themselves represented in leadership roles, it can reinforce that belief that progression is possible. Conversely, when representation is limited, individuals may feel additional pressure to prove their credibility or demonstrate expertise.

For many women working in property, confidence is built through experience, mentorship, and exposure to leadership opportunities. Supportive environments where different perspectives are encouraged can help individuals develop the confidence needed to contribute fully to decision-making discussions.

Leadership Style and Expectations

Traditional perceptions of leadership have historically been shaped by long-standing industry norms. In many sectors, leadership styles have often been associated with assertiveness, direct decision-making, and hierarchical structures.

However, modern leadership increasingly values collaboration, emotional intelligence, and the ability to bring diverse teams together.

Women entering leadership roles are helping broaden these perspectives, demonstrating that effective leadership can take many forms. Organisations that embrace a wider range of leadership styles often benefit from improved communication, stronger team cohesion, and more balanced decision-making.

The Importance of Support Networks

Support networks play a crucial role in career progression. Mentors, sponsors, and peer networks can provide guidance, encouragement and opportunities that help individuals navigate challenges a build leadership capability.

For women working in male-dominated sectors, these networks can be particularly valuable. They create spaces where experiences can be shared and practical advice exchanged.

Industry initiatives that encourage mentoring and knowledge sharing can therefore have a meaningful impact on career development across the sector.

Building More Inclusive Leadership

Encouraging greater gender balance within leadership teams is not simply about representation; it is about creating environments where all voices are heard and valued.

Inclusive leadership culture recognises that diversity of thought strengthens organisations. By encouraging different perspectives and supporting individuals at every stage of their career journey, businesses can build more resilient and forward-thinking teams.

Progress requires commitment from both organisations and industry leaders to champion inclusion and support future talent.

A Conversation the Industry Needs

These topics will be explored further during the EmpowerHER: The Only Woman in the Room – Turning Isolation into Influence panel at UKREiiF 2026.

Chaired by Hannah Cooper, Chief People Officer at LRG, the session will bring together industry leaders to discuss the realities women face within leadership environments and the steps organisations can take to support greater inclusion and progression.
